Posing Isn’t Your Job
What to Expect from a Professional Branding Photographer
One of the biggest misconceptions I see as a branding photographer is the belief that clients need to know how to pose. In reality, that guidance is part of the service they’re hiring for.
Posing well is a skill, not something you’re magically born with. It’s easy, especially when scrolling through Instagram, to assume that some people “just have it” while others don’t. What those photos don’t show is the practice behind them. Like any skill, posing becomes natural only through repetition, awareness, and guidance.
Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours in front of the mirror and behind the camera studying how bodies move - figuring out where to place feet, arms, hips, even my eyebrows. I bring everything I’ve learned into my client sessions. During every branding photoshoot, I guide you through each pose or movement, whether by describing it clearly or demonstrating it myself. We try things, adjust, and refine until the pose feels comfortable in your body. The ones that don’t work get discarded. The ones that do? Those are the moments we capture.
“I don’t know how to pose” or “I feel awkward in front of the camera” is the most common concern I hear before a photoshoot. And without exception, every woman I’ve worked with has left feeling surprised by how comfortable she felt once she realized she didn’t have to figure it out alone.
That’s the difference professional guidance makes and why posing during a professional photoshoot should never feel like something you need to prepare for in advance.
